Winsie (Munnerlyn)
Aycock
(abt 1860 - 1939/41)
Winsey (or Winsie) Munnerlyn Aycock was born around 1860 in
NC to John R. Munnerlyn and Martha "Patsy" West. In the year 1875, Winsey is in
Yalabusha County, Mississippi and marries John T. Aycock (Acock). She
remained in MS long enough to give birth to children Robert b. 1877and John
b. 1879 (Robert was said to have been shot to death in a cotton patch by a
jealous husband). By 1900 they appeared on the Lonoke County, AR census and
had children: Mary b. March 1884, Thomas S. b Nov. 27, 1886 and Andrew S. b
Jan. 1897. They were listed as living next door to James W. Munnerlyn and
his wife Hettie and a few more households away was their son John Aycock and
spouse Alice. A researcher was told by Winsey and John's granddaughter (whom
they lived with) that in the early 1900s Winsey received a letter from
the government advising her that she had land to claim in Oklahoma. Winsey
and John had no transportation to OK and forfeited the land. Winsey
also told that her family was "kin" to Poccahantis. They remained in Lonoke
until their home was destroyed by a tornado. They moved to Little Rock, AR
and resided with their son Thomas until their deaths. John Aycock died May
9, 1937, in Little Rock and is buried in the Lonoke, Brownsville Cemetery
without a marker. Winsey died somewhere around 1939-1941 and is believed to
be buried with John in Brownsville cemetery without a marker.
