Mattie
Belle Bishop was the second oldest daughter of Martha Francis Munnerlyn and
Joseph Wilson Bishop. She was born in Lonoak, Arkansas, in
January1902. Her family moved to Texas when she was a small child. She
married John Alfred Boultinghouse, the son of Frank Verde Boultinghouse and
Kate Jane Meredith when she was 17 years old. Alfred was 19. The
marriage took place in September 1919 in Odem, San Patricio County, Texas.
The wedding was delayed because of the 1919 hurricane hitting Corpus
Christi, Texas. Mattie and Alfred were the parents of
three children, two predeceased her in death. Her oldest child, a
daughter, Katie Francis and her oldest son, Leland Alfred predeceased her.
At this time one son survives her.
Alfred and Mattie farmed near the little community
of Edroy, Texas. They worked together to create a home in which
everyone enjoyed Mattie's cooking and was always made to feel welcome.
She was known as one of the very best cooks in hers and her husband's
family. She was truly a partner with her husband and enjoyed hunting
and fishing with him. She was a good shot and killed her own deer. She
was a beautiful seamstress; made her own clothes and made the most beautiful
quilts. She enjoyed having flower beds in her yard and usually had a
garden that she put up canned goods from. She could make the best
Bread-n-Butter pickles. She loved baseball. She had been raised
in a home where the Bible was studied and she could quote scripture, chapter
and verse. She was a good conversationalist and was a smart woman who
kept up with current affairs and styles. She was a clothes horse.
Mattie had dark hair that had a natural white streak and even her great
granddaughter has "grayed" with the same white streak. She claimed
to be 1/8 Native American. Mattie was a strong woman and could be
called a tom-boy. She worked hard and would pitch right in with the
whatever chores were necessary to make her house a home.
Mattie died when she was 90 years old of
respiratory arrest. She was in good health although she was frail from
age, until her final illness. She had 5 grand children and numerous great-grandchildren
when she died. She was a widow for 21 years. She was buried in Evergreen
Cemetery in Odem, Texas. The same cemetery in which her brothers,
sisters and parents are buried.
