Henry Jackson Munnerlyn
( 10 Jun 1889 - Oct 1969)

Henry Jackson Munnerlyn born in Bennetsville,
South Carolina on June 10, 18901. He is the son of Joseph John and
Florence (Wicker) Munnerlyn and descendant of Revolutionary soldiers among
whom are James Munnerlyn, Tristam Thomas, Josua David, James Odom, and
Thomas Hodges. Mr. Munnerlyn attended the public schools of Marlboro
County, South Carolina, Wofford Fitting School and Wofford College of
Spartanburg. He was married on July 14, 1918, to the former , daughter of James Rainsford Cantelou and Cornelia (Walker)
Cantelou of Edgefield, South Carolina. Their daughter, Cornelia Cantelou
Munnerlyn born July 2, 1921, was married on November 24, 1945, to Robert
Green Barnett of Indianola, Mississippi, where they make their home.
After leaving Wofford College, Henry Jackson Munnerlyn assisted his father
with farming until he was called for duty in the United States Army on
September 22, 1917, in which he served until April 8m, 1919, when he
received his honorable discharge. Within a few months afterward, he
founded the H. J. Munnerlyn Lumber Company of Bennetsville, South
Carolina. Primarily handling lumber, the busness grew when other items
were added and now H. J. Munnerlyn, Incorporated, handles everything in
building material, lumber manufacturing, readymixed concrete, and general
contracting. An active member of National Retail Lumber Dealers
Association, he has served as a Director since 1928,was on the Executive
Committee 1950-51, Director of District No. 2 1951-52, President from 1952
to 1954; promoter of the first exposition of the association held October
2-10, 1954, at Kingsbridge Armory, New York City; and is the recipient of a
plaque fro distinguished service in community and industry in the field of
Public Relations 1949, another plaque for outstanding service of the
Executive Committee from District No. 2 1951-52;and as retiring President in
1954 of National Retail Lumber Dealers Association was presented with a
seven-piece silver service. Mr. Munnerlyn is a member of the
International Order of Hoo-Hoo, the social club of that association.
He received the coveted "Master Merchant" certificate presented by
the American Lumberman, National Lumber magazine in 1947 selected by the
editors in recognition of intelligent management, progressive merchandising
and conscientious service to consumers and community. The cover of
"southern Building Supplies", a monthly trade journal serving
dealers and wholesalers in eighteen southern states, featured a large
picture of Henry J. Munnerlyn, Bennettsville, building executive, and the
facade of his imposing modern building on Parsonage Street, in 1959. A
member of Carolina Lumber and Building Supply Association, he was a Director
from 1930 to 1933, President in 1933-34, Executive Committeeman 1947-49, and
is now a life member of the Board of Directors. He was President from
1941 to 1950 of Home Development Company dealing in real estate and home
construction; and since 1952 has been President of Marlboro Trust Company
Bank and promoter of the Branch Bank which opened on June 26, 1953. He
is on the Board of Directors of Marlboro Building and Loan
Association. Appointed by Administrator Albert M. Cole of the Housing
and Home Finance Agency of Washington, D.C., he served on the Advisory
Committee of National Volunteer Mortgage Credit Committee in 1954 and on the
Committee International Forum in 1954 and for the term ending in 1960. He
was appointed by President Eisenhower in 1956 as a member of Committee on
Occupational Safety and of National Council of Consultants Small Business
Administration, Washington, D. C. Active in community interests, Mr.
Munnerlyn has served as a member sinc 1929 and as Chairman of the Executive
Board since 1951 of the Marlboro County General Hospital which honored him
by naming the new wing of the hospital in his honor with a plaque dedicated
December 14, 1958. He is a Director of Marlboro County Library
Association; on the Board of Marlboro Developing Corporation since 1950; was
Industrial Chairman of Marlboro County Christmas Seal Sale in 1952; sponsor
of Pee Dee Area Council, Inc., Boy Scouts of America 1952; and has been
sponsor of Little Boys' League since 1957. Mr. Munnerlyn was a Director of
Bennettsville Chamber of Commerce in 1953-54; and during this period was
appointed member of the committee on Construction and Civic Developments of
the United States Chamber of Commerce. He was a participant in the
Building Material Dealers Clinic, Division of University Extension of the
University of Tennessee in 1951; Who's Who on Program of Southeastern
Dealers Management Forum and Building Show held October 22, 1953, at the
Biltmore Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia, with Albert M. Cole. Mr. Munnerlyn was
selected as "Man of the Week" by Florence Morning News, Florence,
South Carolina, daily newspaper in 1960. A former member of the Elks Club,
he is a Charter Member of Bennettsville Rotary Club which was organized in
1940 of which he was a Director and President 1945-46; member of Marlboro
County Country Club; Charter Member of American Legion Post No. 60 of which
he was Commander in 1933 and the recipient of the American Legion Award for
loyal and efficient service in that office and of the forty year award from
Marlboro Post No. 60. he is a Charter Member of the Fletcher Stubbs
Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars in which he has held continuous membership
since its organization in 1946. During World War I, he served in the
United States Army with Headquarters Troop 81st "Wildcat" Division
as Private, Corporal, November 22, 1917, Sergeant January 5, 1918, Supply
Sergeant January 25, 1918, appointed First Sergeant February 5, 1919, sailed
from Hoboken, New Jersey, July 31, 1918, and landed in England on August 13,
1918. With the American Expeditionary Forces, he participated in the
battles of St. Die Sector from September 21 to October 20, 1918; Meuse
Argonne Offensive November 9-11, 1918; and served with Replacement Def. Cas.
Co. 2431 Infantry until his discharge on April 8, 1919, at Camp Upton, New
York. Mr. Munnerlyn held the public office of member of Bennetsville
City Council from 1935 to 1947; and in the latter year was appointed Colonel
on the Staff of Governor Strom Thurmond. A member of the First
Methodist Church of Bennettsville, he has served on its Board of Trustees
1944-54, as an elected Steward on the Official Board 1954-57, and since
elected in 1957 has served on the Board of Trustees. Mr. Munnerlyn
Likes to travel but his special interest is the planning and building of
homes.
