Virgil Vascar "Mike" Munnerlyn, Jr.
was born 23 July 1923, Bloomburg, Case Co., Texas, to Virgil Vescar Munnerlyn,
Sr. and Zelma Perl Harkins. Mike married to Billie Jean Day.
Mike served on a Mine-Sweeper in the U.S. Navy
during World War II. His ship helped to sweep the mine from Tokyo Harbor.
He later earned his Education Degree from Centenary College in Shreveport
and taught school at several schools in the Caddo Parish School
System. He took advanced degrees at Stephen F. Austin University at Natchitoches,
TX. He served as principal of Vivian Elementary and Junior High School
for many years until he retired from teaching after 30 years. He then
was offered and accepted a position as Director of Camp Bethany, a new
Baptist encampment. He and Billie Jean Lived on the campground and
managed the camp for 10 years. Mike retired again in Dec. of 1989 and
they moved back to Vivian where they were very active in Vivian Baptist
Church until Mike's illness and death. He loved children and youth and
working with them. He was a gentle man and a gentlemen and certainly
helped shape the lives of many young people in the North Louisiana area.
Mike died from Cancer on 5 November 1990 in Shreveport, Caddo
Parish, Louisiana.
