Mary
Ann Munnerlyn was born September 30, 1928 to William Ford Munnerlyn and
Lillian Hamilton Munnerlyn. She
was raised on a 30-acre farm between Bryan and College Station, Texas on
which the family raised chickens, hogs and horses.
She suffered from malaria in 1939 at the age of 11 years.
She graduated from A&M Consolidated High School in 1946 and then
attended the University of Texas at Austin where she earned a Bachelor of
Fine Arts degree (majored in Radio Broadcasting) in June 1950. Her college
career was rich: Secretary of the Students’ Association, an Outstanding
Student, Bluebonnet Belle finalist, University Sweetheart nominee, sponsor
of Navy R.O.T.C., and member of the Ashbel Literary Society (reporter),
Radio Guild (secretary), Orange Jackets, Mortar Board, Spooks, Displaced
Persons Committee, Houston Club and Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority (secretary).
Mary’s
family had moved to Houston, Texas in the summer of 1947 so, upon
graduation, she settled in with them. Mary
married Robert G. Anderson on Wednesday, December 6, 1950 in Houston. Their only son, Robert G. Anderson, Jr., was born August 1,
1952 in Houston. Illness
haunted Mary during their marriage: malaria again and then leukemia from
which she died on March 22, 1954 in Houston, Texas.
