Joseph Francis Munnerlyn, the son of Henry Durant Munnerlyn and Francis "Fannie" Louisa Hemingway, was born in Choppee, Georgetown Co., South Carolina on June 9, 1889. Joseph attended school at Wofford College, 1910, Medical College of South Carolina, 1911, and University of Maryland, School of Medicinal, 1914. Joseph was a Psychiatric Doctor practicing Allopathy. He began his practice in Choppee, S.C. on 18 may 1914. He then moved to Columbia, S.C. and began working for the State Hospital for Insane on July 15, 1919. Joseph married on October 17, 1918 to Loretta Allen at Columbia, Richland Co., South Carolina. Joseph and Loretta had one known child, Joseph Francis, Jr. Joseph died from a long illness on August 25, 1923 in Columbia, Richland Co., South Carolina. He was burier at St. Peters Cemetery, Columbia, Richland Co., South Carolina..
